Administrative Structure of India

The Administrative divisions are Indian sub-national administrative units; they compose a nested hierarchy of country sub-divisions.
The smaller subdivisions-blocks and villages exist only in rural areas; whereas corporations, councils and wards exist in urban areas.

Tehsils, talukas, blocks or mandals, headed by a Tehsildar or Talukdar, comprise several villages or village clusters. The governmental bodies at the Tehsil level are called the Panchayat Samiti. Villages (Gram Panchayat) are often the lowest level of subdivisions in India. A Municipal Corporation is an administering local urban government body, generally for cities of population 300,000 or more. This standard varies from state to state, according to laws passed by state legislatures.
